Genus: Amphidinium| Dinoflagellate Order: Gymnodiniales Family: Gymnodiniaceae Description: Unarmoured (athecate) free-living cell, sometimes enclosed in a hyaline cyst. Some species are bethic or epiphytic. Cells can be globular or fusiform, and contain one large, lobed chloroplast. Large, dense blooms of Amphidinium can result in red tides.
