Although the start of June coincided with the annual return of summer gloom to this sampling locale, the phytoplankton community remains vigorous. Net phytoplankton biomass increased relative to last sample (Net Fraction: ca 1.98X to 6.56 ug/L chl; Total: ca. 1.28X to 21.91 ug/L by in vivo fluorescence). Phaeocystis colonies were abundant, resulting in thick net samples. Chain-forming/colonial diatoms (Chaetoceros and Asterionellopsis spp.) were still abundant in the samples. Pseudo-nitzschia spp. increased in abundance (ca. 1.37X to 113,209 cells/L, 82% seriata size class). Dinoflagellates also increased in abundance but remained rare in relative abundance (<1000 cells/L).

Phytoplankton biomass continued on an upward trend (Net Fraction: ca 3.13X to 8.31 ug/L chl; Total: ca 2.04X to 75.69 ug/L by in vivo fluorescence). Diatoms remained dominant, with abundant Bacteriastrum spp. contributing to dense net samples. Pseudo-ntizschia spp. were still common (ca. 1.12X to 85,204 cells/L, 71.1% % seriata size class). Phaeocystis spp. colonies and free swimming cells were also common while dinoflagellates remained at background levels in the community. Fecal pellets with Pseudo-nitzschia were observed and the slow filtering samples and particle rafts indicated an abundance of exopolymeric substances in this week's sample.

Little change in total phytoplankton biomass was observed but this masked a sharp increase in the net fraction biomass (Net Fraction: ca 18.4X to 1.37 ug/L chl; Total: ca 0.99X to 10.21 ug/L by in vivo fluorescence). This reflected a return of Pseudo-nitzschia to a true community dominant (ca. 141X to 147,001 cells/L, 99.2% seriata size class). They were accompanied and being pestered by oblong to spherical flagelates 7-15u, with brown-pigmented inclusions) found attached to ca 25% of the Pn chains as well as free swiming. Dinoflagellates were rare. Water temperature increased by 2oC over the week although sampling occurred during an abrupt downward spike in temperature.

The MWII WQ sonde recorded a steady increase in chlorophyll fluorescence since 2/21. Our persistent, yet very wet
sampler was indeed rewarded with this locales first net phytoplankton bloom of the season (Net Fraction: ca 29.0X
to 2.8 ug/L chl; Total: ca 4.1X to 12.65 ug/L by in vivo fluorescence). The community was dominated by diatoms,
although all groups were represented. Diatoms were led by a mix of Chaetoceros and Lauderia spp. Over 25% of the
Lauderia chains held auxospores and division planes were evident in most diatom species observed. A dinoflagellate community was active in the background, led by a mix of Ceratium spp (ca 1,843 cells/L). A single Dinophysis tripos was observed. Tintinids were abundant along with other grazers in the sample.

Net tow was still mostly detritus/debris, but there was an increase in phytoplankton biomass and diversity from last week.  The diatoms are getting ready for spring!  Assemblage co-dominated by Chaetoceros and Thalassiosira.  The Detonula chains had auxospores (insert Salt-N-Pepa tune here).  And there were probably 3 species of Pseudo-nitzschia.

Rain finally came to the Monterey Bay Region over the weekend. Water temperature declined monotonically by a degree since last sampling. Phytoplankton community biomass hit a new
low (Net Fraction: ca 0.31X at 0.016 ug/L chl; Total: ca 0.56X to 1.49 ug/L by in vivo fluorescence). Of the sparse biomass, dinoflagellates were slightly dominant. Dinophysis tripos was present (198 cells/L) along with several Ceratium species. Eggs and dividing embryos were abundant along with sediment and detritus.
