Description: Unarmoured dorsoventally-flattened cells. Cell ventrally concave, dorsally convex. Round nucleus present, and chloroplasts present. Apical groove is straight. Of the 12 accepted species, many were formerly in the genus Gymnodinium.

Distribution: Oceanic to estuarine, warm temperate to tropical.
Synonym: Karenia brevis formerly Gymnodinium brevis
Interesting Facts: Karenia brevis produces brevetoxin, a potent neurotoxin
