Description: Cylindrical cells with dome-shaped valves. They are generally solitary. Girdle is composed of many bands. Spines on both valves, one valve with series of short hooked spines in addition to the longer ones.  Chloroplasts are flat and elongated and near the center of the cell.

Cell Size: Diameter (apical axis) 20-40um, Length (pervalvar axis) 20-150um

Distribution: Oceanic in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, sometimes found in inshore waters.
