Description: Flattened elliptical cells (in valve view) that form spiral, curved chains. Cells joined by flattened apical horns.

Cell Size: Length (apical axis) 10-60um

Distribution: Cosmopolitan, excluding polar regions.

Interesting Facts: First identified in 1831.
