Description: Pennate diatom. Cells joined by valve faces into star-shaped or spiraling chains. Two chloroplasts per cell.

Cell Size: Length 30-150um

Distribution: Neritic, cosmopolitan in cold to temperate coastal waters.

Synonym: Asterionella glacialis = Asterionella japonica
