Our persistent, yet very wet sampler was indeed rewarded with this locales first net phytoplankton bloom of the season (Net Fraction: ca 29.0X to 2.8 ug/L chl; Total: ca 4.1X to 12.65 ug/L by in vivo fluorescence). The community was dominated by diatoms, although all groups were represented. Diatoms were led by a mix of Chaetoceros and Lauderia spp. Over 25% of the Lauderia chains held auxospores and division planes were evident in most diatom species observed. A dinoflagellate community was active in the background, led by a mix of Ceratium spp (ca 1,843 cells/L). A single Dinophysis tripos was observed. Tintinids were abundant along with other grazers in the sample. On Monday a red tide patch was advected shoreward of the MWII pier, bucket samples at the Monterey Abalone Co. revealed essentially a mono-culture of the ciliate Myrionecta spp. These were still common in today's net and whole water samples.
